Switch off stress using sensation
Calm your body first, and your mind will follow
Your mind can’t settle when it’s stuck in your thoughts.
Somatic grounding works because it brings your attention out of your head and back into your body, where your nervous system can actually calm down.
First, you pick any body part — your finger, your arm, your chest.
It’s like saying:
“Hey brain, stop thinking — come here.”
That shift pulls you out of spiralling and into physical sensation.
Then you choose an anchor — a stable point where your body meets the world-feet on the floor, or hands resting on your lap etc.
Anchors send a message through your nervous system:
“I am supported. I am safe.”
Once your attention is in your body and resting on something steady, you slow your breathing.
This works like turning down the volume on stress:
- your muscles soften
- your heart rate eases
- your fight‑or‑flight response switches off
Finally, you re‑orient to the room around you.
Your brain reconnects with the present instead of getting pulled back into overthinking. This is why somatic grounding works even when your mind feels chaotic: you calm the body first, and the mind follows.
This short reset guides you through five simple steps using body awareness, physical sensations, breathing, and orientation.
